The console launched with models priced at $499 and $599 respectively. Sales were reported to be slow due to the original system being so expensive. Many news outlets reported that its launch was a PR misstep for Sony.
It was also reported that the console’s design was rather difficult for developers to create games for. Over time Sony was able to improve the console’s sales. With the release of the slim model the company created a new ad campaign. Sales for the slim resulted in positive yearly operating costs, as the console was no longer made at a loss.
In 2011, the PlayStation Network outage occurred. This was memorable for many reasons. This resulted in players not having access to online capability for a month. Sony also faced another PR issue which included being sued by some players. After the outage, the company assured players a breach would no longer be likely. Terms and conditions were changed were they could not be sued should it occur.
Eventually, the company was able to define the console with rebranding, cheaper models, a series of great exclusives and features. To date the console has sold over 80 million units worldwide. This lead them to a strong position before the launch of the PlayStation 4.
